Rye Barleywine/Rye Ale (Sept 3/2005)

Target gravity - 1.073 (1.055 rye beer, 1.100 barleywine)
Target volume - 9.5 gal (6 ale, 3.5 barleywine)

  • 18.5# Pale malt
  • 6.25# Light rye malt
  • 1.5# 40L crystal

Protein rest - 50C/122F for 30min.
Sacc. rest - 67C/153F for 90min. (iodine tested)

First runnings went into the barleywine, second runnings into rye beer.

Barleywine:

  • 0.5# light DME added to hit gravity
  • 60min - 1.5 oz. Northdown (6.7%)
  • 15min - 0.5 oz. Centennial (10.1%)
  • 15min - 0.5 oz. Cascade (6.2%)
  • 0 min - 0.5 oz. Centennial (10.1%)
  • 0 min - 0.5 oz. Cascade (6.2%)

Yield - 3.25 gal with OG 1.100. Final gravity after 5 weeks was 1.022, for 10.42% ABV and an apparent attenuation of 76.52%

Rye beer:

  • 60min - 0.75 oz. Northdown (6.7%)
  • 15min - 0.5 oz. Saaz (3.0%)
  • 15min - 0.5 oz. Willamette (6.3%)
  • 0 min - 0.5 oz. Saaz (3.0%)
  • 0 min - 0.5 oz. Willamette (6.3%)

Yield - 5.25 gal with OG 1.061

Wort was oxygenated before yeast was pitched (no starter).

The barleywine was pitched with WLP001 California Ale. I think we used the same for the rye beer.
